Featured Message: Black History Month

Black individuals have made a significant impact in every area of society. In honor of Black History Month and this year’s theme from the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, we are recognizing historical moments and the crucial contributions of Black individuals.

HISTORICAL MOMENTS

Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was a network of safe houses to assist Black people who were enslaved to freedom. Thousands of people used the Underground Railroad between 1820 and 1860. People traveled to Canada, Mexico, the West, the Caribbean islands, and more.

“I was the conductor of the Underground Railroad for eight years, and I can say what most conductors can't say — I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger.”

– Harriet Tubman

The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters

The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) was founded in 1925 as the first African American labor union to be chartered by the American Federation of Labor (AFL). It was established to improve the working conditions, wages, and dignity of Black railroad porters, and gathered membership of 18,000 workers across Canda, Mexico and the United States at its peak.

The BSCP, under the leadership of A. Philip Randolph, faced significant challenges, including discrimination and resistance from both railroad companies and the wider labor movement. Despite these obstacles, the union gained recognition in 1937 after a prolonged struggle via a signed contract with The Pullman Company, securing better working conditions, pay, and union rights for its members.

The BSCP played a crucial role in the broader Civil Rights Movement by challenging racial injustice and helping to lay the foundation for future labor and civil rights advances.

Fair Housing Act

The Fair Housing Act of 1968 was a follow-up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This addressed racial discrimination in the sale, rental, or financing of housing.

LABORING FOR CHANGE

Kizzmekia S. Corbett, PhD

Born in 1986

Dr. Corbett-Helaire, an assistant professor at Harvard University, was instrumental in developing the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. She and her team at the National Institutes of Health developed mRNA-1273, used by Moderna. Dr. Corbett-Helaire has earned several prestigious awards for her research.

Solomon Fuller, MD

1872-1953

Dr. Fuller pioneered Alzheimer's research and advanced the study of many other neurodegenerative diseases, including schizophrenia and manic depression.

Shirley Chisholm

1924-2005

Shirley was the first Black woman in Congress, representing New York’s 12th congressional district from 1969 to 1983. She advocated for women and minorities during her seven-year term. Shirley expanded the food stamp program and helped create the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

In 1971, she became a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, which ensures equal rights, opportunity, and access to Black Americans and other marginalized communities.

Senior Living Scoop

Here’s your senior living knowledge scoop of the month!

What makes for an active, happy life in your senior years? Diet and exercise are key, of course, but equally important are your connections to others, which can even impact your physical health.

As people age, though, their social circles may become smaller and their physical abilities less robust. Too often, the result is even greater isolation.

“Being at home can be lonely. That’s why a lot of people eventually decide to move to Ovation,” said Erick Lorenzana, General Manager of Ovation Sienna Hills. “They want to mingle with other people, get to know other people. I think that social aspect is super important.”

Areté Living Acquires 5 Oregon Senior Living Communities

Areté Living, a senior living development and management organization, acquired five new senior living communities in Oregon as of February 1, 2025.

The new buildings include:

Areté Living was founded in Oregon with a portfolio encompassing senior living communities across the Pacific Northwest and Midwest. This company was a division of Avamere until 2022, when leadership announced its spinoff and new brand as Areté Living. With these five new properties, the organization now supports 31 senior living communities across six states.

This acquisition aligns with the company’s strategic growth initiatives.

“We are enthusiastic about this expansion in Oregon,” stated Sarah Silva, President of Areté Living. “We are committed to providing high-quality care and fostering an environment of inclusivity and belonging. Together with our dedicated team, we look forward to extending our legacy of excellence in senior living as we honor our mission to enhance the life of every person we serve.”

Areté Living Wins Exemplary Awards for DEIB Program

Areté Living won two Prism Awards from WTWH Healthcare for their Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) program.

Kenny Dew, Area Finance Manager and Chair of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Council with Areté Living, earned the DEIB Champion Award. This designation honors individuals who have championed DEIB within their companies.

Areté Living earned the Social Stewardship Award, recognizing companies that have made significant achievements in social responsibility initiatives related to community engagement. This includes philanthropic efforts or contributions made to the community through programs, partnerships, and outreach.

"I am deeply proud to have our organization recognized for DEIB and social stewardship," stated Sarah Silva, President and Co-Founder of Areté Living. "This recognition marks neither the beginning nor the end of our work. While there is a national effort to dismantle progress that prioritizes fundamental human needs, we at Areté remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering and accelerating a culture of belonging for everyone. Leaders like Kenny are instrumental in advancing this mission, and we are so fortunate to have such dedicated champions driving this vital work forward."

DEIB Champion

Dew has been involved with DEIB at Areté Living since 2020 and assumed his role as Chair of the DEIB Council in 2022.

He was instrumental in adding the company’s new core value: “a culture of respect, belonging, and celebration of diversity.” In 2024, Dew played a crucial role in establishing Juneteenth as a company holiday, an awaited moment for many of our employees.

Dew’s latest update to the DEIB program is the introduction of Inclusion Advocates leading four pillars: people, education, talent, and community. He and the DEIB Council determined goals and projects for each pillar, as well as generated excitement among employees to participate in this great work.

Dew is heavily involved in all Areté Living’s DEIB campaigns honoring observances and holidays through the year, ensuring they are authentic, valuable, and accessible to employees and the public. Each campaign is thoughtfully curated with resources, speakers, and more across various platforms to encourage employees to learn, celebrate, and participate.

“I’m honored to be named a DEIB Champion,” Dew stated. “While I am enormously proud to have been selected, this accomplishment is really a testament to our DEIB team members and collaborators. I’ve had the good fortune of partnering with people who work every day to further our organization’s dedication to celebrating our residents and team members, and to cultivate an environment they see themselves represented in. I have been so impressed with the enthusiasm and ideas they bring to the table as we continue to expand our efforts, and I can’t wait to have our biggest year yet in 2025!”
